Types of Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder comes in a few forms, with the most common being bipolar I, bipolar II, and cyclothymia.

Bipolar I

is defined by at least one episode of mania, an intense state of elevated mood, energy, or irritability that lasts more than a week. These episodes can disrupt sleep, behavior, and daily life. Most people with bipolar I also go through depressive episodes, though not always.

Bipolar II

involves patterns of depression and hypomania. It is a less severe form of mania. Unlike bipolar I, full manic episodes don’t occur, and people often seek help during the depressive phases, unaware of the hypomanic ones.

Cyclothymia

is a rarer, milder version of bipolar disorder. In this type of bipolar disorder, you may experience frequent mood swings between low-grade depression and hypomania. Its symptoms are less intense but are still disruptive over time.

Bipolar II and cyclothymia can be harder to detect. That is why evaluation by a mental health professional is important for an accurate diagnosis.

Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder

It’s normal to have emotional ups and downs occasionally; brief mood changes lasting hours are typical and do not imply bipolar disorder. Understanding the nature, duration, and intensity is the key to identifying bipolar disorder. The symptoms of bipolar disorder may include symptoms of mania, depression, and hypomania.

Manic in Bipolar Disorder

Manic episodes can initially feel energizing, but they often escalate into overwhelming and unpredictable experiences. These episodes typically last a week or more and may become so intense that hospitalization is necessary.

Common symptoms include:

Hypomania in Bipolar Disorder

Hypomania is a milder form of bipolar mania that can significantly affect mood, energy, and behavior, though it often goes unrecognized. These episodes usually last at least four days and, unlike full mania, do not typically lead to hospitalization or severe impairments.

Common symptoms of hypomania include:

Depression in Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar depression is not only feeling low; it involves intense, prolonged symptoms that often last two weeks or more and can significantly interfere with daily life.

Common symptoms include:
